Exorcists (エクソシスト, Ekusoshisuto) are human beings who have bonded with a shard of Innocence and serve the Black Order, fighting against the Earl of Millennium, the Noah Family and their army of Akuma. Innocence can only be wielded by certain humans; these humans are called Accommodators (適合者, Tekigō-sha), or Apostles of God. Once an Accommodator has joined the Black Order, they are given the official title of "Exorcist", a rank within the Order below the Generals, the Chief Officer and the Great Generals in that order.
As Exorcists train with their Innocence, their synchronization rate, a measure of their connectivity to their Innocence, increases, empowering their attacks and allowing them to use new abilities while invoked, or while their Innocence it active. A lower synchronization rate indicates an Exorcist's inability to properly bond with their Innocence, which can be dangerous for them.
When an Exorcist reaches and exceeds the 100% synchronization rate limit, they reach the critical point - when an Exorcist's synchronization rate drops below ten percent, it becomes too dangerous for them to continue wielding their Innocence, and if it drops to or below zero (or if a non-Accommodator attempts to force a synchronization), the person in question could become a Fallen One, a former human whose body and mind has been taken over by their innocence.
bookmen
The Bookmen Clan is an organization dedicated to recording and maintaining the true history of the world. They have a history of allying themselves to various sides of world-wide conflicts, both the "good" and the "bad", and they consider their neutrality sacrosanct.Little is known about how the Bookmen operate as the organization is very secretive. It is apparent, however, that it is vital for the Bookmen to stay unbiased at all times and remain completely neutral; this is because when recording history, even the slightest bias could taint information. As a direct result of this requirement, many other rules have been formed to prevent bias. The foremost of these rules is the prohibition of any attachments or affections; it is unknown to what extent this rule exists, but friendships are forbidden.
As an extension of the required neutrality, the Bookmen do not chose sides in wars. They will, however, form temporary alliances with one or both sides of a conflict in order to gain a more detailed record of war and in return may provide information and/or their skills as warriors. This is most apparent (in the anime) when, thirty-five years ago, the current Bookman allied with the Noah Family but at the present is allied with the opposing side, the Black Order. (At the moment, on S&S, bookmen are allied with the Order). Furthermore, Bookmen are protected by the Vatican and members of the Black Order of any rank may not interfere with a Bookman's mission to record history.
Bookmen may not interfere with the events of history, and must act only as observers. In the event that a Bookman allies with one side of a conflict, it appears that only information and battle support is provided under particular circumstances.
clergymen
Clergymen can range from Finders, researchers, to simple household staff around the Black Order.Finders are volunteers who help the Order after suffering from the loss of their relatives due to Akuma raids. Their job is to investigate the places where paranormal activities occur in order to search for innocence fragments - when said fragment is found or the number of Akuma is high, the Exorcists are called. Finders' other purpose is to help Exorcists in need - such as providing them food, equipment, and an access to phone, as well as taking care of travel arrangements.
If not a finder, clergymen are usually in one of the below departments:
Science Section - Responsible for the research and development of the Innocence, as well as designing the uniforms for the Exorcists.
Intelligence Section - In charge of the Finders, who gather information from around the world.
Medical Section - Responsible for the general health and welfare of the Black Order personnel.
Signal Sections - In charge of all communications between Finders, Exorcists and the Order.
Security Section - Guard all entryways (i.e. gates, waterways, etc.) into the facility.
Logistics Sections - In charge of day-to-day functioning in the Order, including meals, cleaning and accounting.
akuma
Akuma (アクマ, Akuma lit. demon) take up the majority of The Earl's army and serve as his "foot soldiers." Akuma are created when a living human in mourning over the loss of a loved one makes a contract with the Earl to bring the soul of said lost loved one back; the Earl presents the living human with a skeleton of Dark Matter and has them call the departed soul of the loved one back, and the soul then becomes trapped within the skeleton and forced to obey the Earl's will. Once trapped within the skeleton, the soul then "puts on" the body of the loved one who called it back, using their skin to move around in the human world in disguise. After the transformation is complete, the Akuma, now a Level 1, the soul of which is tormented and consumed by hate for the living world, goes around killing in order to grow and evolve to become stronger and better serve the Earl's purpose.
noah
The Noah Family (ノアの一族, Noa no ichizoku) is a group of thirteen humans whom have had the "Noah gene" within their bodies awakened, and follow the will of Noah and the Millennium Earl. All humans on Earth are descendants of Noah and his family, who survived the Great Flood and populated the Earth once more. Every so often, and when there is a vacancy within the Family, a gene within a random human, called the "Noah gene," awakens, turning that human into a Noah and causing them to fall under the influence of his hatred and memories stored within their blood. (*canon position*)
Generally, the Noah Family will have thirteen members, including the Millennium Earl who leads them, called the Apostles; when one of the members dies, an indeterminate amount of time later the same Noah will awaken in a new human, though under a new human name and a new human mindset.
Each member of the Main Noah Family is known as an 'Apostle', and each Apostle has their own Noah name, though a few choose to continue to go by their human name.
Members of the Noah Family, when they are in their Noah forms, are distinguished by their slightly darkened skin, amber eyes, and the line of black, cross-like markings that go across their foreheads, called stigmata.
However, here on S&S, there are the set 13 Apostles, as well as numerous other Noah - the 'Unawakened Noah.' These are humans born with the Noah gene; however, this gene remains in a slightly latent state, only 'half-awakening.' These humans contain the memories stored within Noah blood, but they do not possess the standard Noah abilities; they do, however, possess a power.
All Noah, unawakened and the Apostles, have a corresponding 'Representation': judge, pleasure, desire, wisdom, corrosion, pity, dreams, bond, lust, ability, wrath, and destruction. They will have a personality trait that reflects this, as well as a corresponding ability.[/style]
